Galileo Galilei‘s groundbreaking observations from Padua in 1610 marked a crucial moment in human history, heralding the birth of the scientific method and challenging prevailing cosmological beliefs. Using the telescope for the first time to observe the night sky, Galileo made revolutionary discoveries: mountains on the Moon, the four moons of Jupiter, and myriads of new stars in the Milky Way. His meticulous observations of the phases of Venus provided convincing evidence for the heliocentric model proposed by Copernicus.
We will retrace Galileo’s epic observations from the skies of Padua and we will see how they not only expanded our knowledge of the solar system but also triggered a real scientific revolution, shifting attention from dogma to empirical evidence and paving the way for the development of modern astronomy. Finally we will illustrate Galileo’s scientific legacy in Padua.
