THIS SUMMER, TRAVEL THROUGH THE BIG SCREEN.
In this very unique summer season, Cinema Akil takes you on a journey through the big screen with a summer-long series of timeless classics, contemporary favorites celebrating the joy of travel. The program starts on the 26th June and continues to September 2020 and will travel through the screen to different destinations through its country focus.
We commence the journey with Cinema Akil Traveller: Journey to Italy, a love letter to the country hard hit by the pandemic in a special 4-part series held in collaboration with our Italian Cultural Institute and Front Row Filmed Entertainment and will run from 26 June – 6 August 2020.
Cinema Akil Traveller: Journey to Italy will kick off with two tributes to Rome starting with the timeless Palm d’Or award winning Federico Fellini masterpiece LA DOLCE VITA (1960) will travel to Rome through the adventures of gossip columnist Marcello Mastroianni, where his dreams, fantasies, nightmares and fears are mirrored by the hedonism all around him.
The program will continue 86th Academy Award winner Paolo Sorrentino’s LA GRANDE BELLEZZA (2013), a celebration of Rome through the eyes of 65-year-old Jep Gambardella, revealing the city in all its glory: a timeless landscape of absurd, exquisite beauty.
We will move on to the Mediterranean sea off the Italian coast with two Academy Award winning films from the 1990. The first is IL POSTINO (1994) a moving tale of poetry, love and friendship set on a breathtaking landscape off of the Italian coast. The closing film is the critically acclaimed MEDITERRANEO (1991) directed by Gabriele Salvatores, an antiwar story set during World War II on a seemingly deserted island in the middle of the Aegean Sea.
