Established in 2019, the Italian Archaeological Mission in Umm al-Quwain is actively collaborating with the local Department of Tourism and Archaeology on a series of projects aimed at studying and enhancing the archaeological heritage of the Emirate. Alongside an archaeological reconnaissance activity, the Mission is involved in the extensive excavation of two exceptionally important sites, Tell Abraq (c. 2500 BC-300 AD) and the Late Antique monastery and village located on Siniya Island (c. 600-750 AD). The main results of these investigations will be presented in the broader context of human frequentation of the Umm al-Quwain lagoon (Khawr al-Bayḍāʾ – the only one still intact along the coast of the Emirates) from the Neolithic to the present day.
